When you think of the term “hybrid,” what comes to mind? A car? A dog? The post-Covid era has given rise to a new normal, with easing restrictions, yet we still, and may not ever, experience daily life as we once did. But that’s ok. Necessity drives invention, and in the case of hybrids, the concept of the hybrid event hits the motherlode. What’s a hybrid event? A hybrid event is an event such as a conference or summit, a concert, a sporting event, or an auction, that has something for everyone. A hybrid event takes place both…

When it comes to surprises, there are good ones: birthday parties, visits from old friends, or a "just because" card. Then there are the bad ones: discovering that what you thought was blue cheese is, in fact, just moldy cheese, believing Facebook protects your data, Luke Skywalker's paternity test, and last but not least, hidden fees. Those pesky fines, arbitrary "convenience" fees, or fine print surcharges. There is nothing more aggravating then expecting to pay one amount only to receive a much higher bill. So, in the interest of transparency, let us explain directly how our pricing works.…

The new year is all about self-improvement and looking forward. As such, our developers caught the spirit and churned out a new release for both server and mobile SDK. They improved the performance of our autoscale solution and load balancing stream manager, added Flash to HLS audio support (so you can video call your parents more often this year), and updated the mobile example applications. Having already started down the path of self-improvement, it's time to continue looking forward to future improvements. What do you want to see added to Red5 Pro? Let us know! Release 2.1.0 -…

Dan Rayburn recently wrote a blog post stating that Content Delivery Networks are quickly moving away from the Flash streaming protocol RTMP. I've been hearing this from a number of our customers as well, and I agree that this is the direction that the CDN industry is taking. The solution that they all seem to be moving towards is HTTP based protocols like HLS and MPEG-dash. This is great for them because HTTP is way easier to support at scale, and it's widely supported across a huge number of players/clients. As I've written before though, HTTP based protocols come…

We've been heads down on a number of optimizations and bug fixes in our SDK over the last month, and we are excited to announce version 1.3.0 to the public. In particular we have made it possible to tweak SDK settings to support high fidelity audio and have lowered the latency on both the publisher and subscriber side. This is in direct response to how you folks are using our SDKs with things like IoT audio devices and music streaming apps. of course all apps will benefit from the majority of the fixes in this release. We've been…

Quick! Get it while you can! Our $55/month price is going away soon. Based on the number of features and the level of support we are providing to our customers we’ve made the hard decision to raise our prices. Starting in August, our monthly subscription will be increased to $119 which gets you one server instance, and the peak number of additional instances used during the month will be charged at $79/month each. We are grandfathering the old pricing for all of our existing paid customers, and we will be glad to extend that to everyone else,…

So...what exactly is IoT and what is the fundamental purpose of such technology? The Internet of Things is one of those buzzwords people like to drop into conversation for effect, even though most probably don’t know what it means. After a bit of searching myself, I found this Forbes article which provides a spot-on definition: "Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cell phones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything…

We talk a lot about live-streaming - so what? Why is it so important and (most importantly) what makes Red5 Pro special? Our software was created to give you the flexibility to do what you want, how you want to do it. From using GoPro cameras, streaming technical instructions, and challenging how "live" your television really is, Our CEO and Founder Chris Allen, describes some of the projects that showcase the powerful tool that is Red5 Pro.…

We are excited to announce the new 1.2.0 release of Red5 Pro. In addition to quite a few bug fixes, this version adds the ability to deploy clusters on top of AWS or Google Compute Engine that automatically expand and contract depending on the load. We call this feature Autoscaling. Autoscaling is a huge feature because it allows you, our developers, to deploy a scalable, low-latency, live streaming platform on the cloud platform of your choice. And even more important--once you have it configured, you can just leave it alone and it will take care of scaling for…

Earlier this week Tsahi Levent-Levi wrote up a great post on how he thinks h.264 is the protocol of choice for WebRTC apps moving forward. There’s so much that’s true about what he wrote, and I tend to agree on almost every point he makes. h.264 is supported in hardware encoders for just about every mobile device out there, and with Microsoft supporting it and not VP9/VP8, it seems like an obvious choice. That, and I don’t think anyone in the world believes that Apple will pick anything other than h.264/AAC for…

As Twitter and Facebook duke it out for live streaming dominance with their apps, there are other, more niche players that are showing tremendous promise. We took a look at what’s out today, and which ones have the potential to make it big. The trend we are seeing is that niche markets and highly specific applications are the ways that these new apps are distinguishing themselves. Within this trend, we have noticed two key differentiators: 1. streaming apps targeting actual "needs" or consumer pain points, such as providing easy live access to international soccer matches, and 2.…

So you've got the Red5 Pro Server up and running on your Android device and your application is ready to stream. Ready, set, publish! Uh oh, the camera is upside down! Not quite the dramatic effect you were looking for. What's up with that? Some manufacturers are now physically installing the camera upside down to save space and make wiring easier. Rather than walking on the ceiling, this fix will have you right-side up in no time. By modifying the existing R5Camera constructor we can tell the device to automatically rotate the view to the proper orientation. First we create…

I know what you are thinking. We probably couldn't have picked a worse day (April Fools Day) to release. But we aren’t letting that stop us. While Google literally and figuratively dropped the mic today, we instead have actually improved the mic with echo cancellation for Android. Not only that, we've improved performance on both iOS and Android and fixed a ton of bugs. We also did a bit of dropping our selves. We dropped the CPU usage down on both iOS and Android by 85% which improves battery life and heat issues. While there aren’t a lot…

The Balancing Act of Stream Quality One question we get consistently from developers using Red5 Pro is: what are the best settings for my stream to create the best quality experience? While we wish we could just have one short answer to this question, it is complex, and ultimately becomes a balancing act. Chris Wendt from Comcast did a great presentation this week at the WebRTCBoston Meetup where he talked about One-to-Many Live Broadcasts with WebRTC. In the talk he showed a diagram of a triangle which he referred to as the "Triangle of Despair." The three corners…

Time to go Live at Scale! You’re about to launch a big marketing push for your live video streaming app. Your marketing team is confident that the event will attract somewhere between 1,000 (worst case) and 20,000 (best case) active, or concurrent, subscribers. Or even more challenging, what happens if your silent launch somehow attracts thousands more subscribers than you anticipated? Clustering to the Rescue Red5 Pro clustering can help you manage your overnight success! Clustering allows for near-infinite scale by distributing the streams to multiple instances. This post hopes to quickly get you up to speed…

Reflecting on 2015 and what we’ve built over the last couple of years, I started thinking about Red5 Pro and the reasons why we built it in the first place. So I figured I should write a post. Why did we spend so much time and energy building this thing? Not only did we see that there was a trend of people wanting to make new mobile experiences based on live streaming like Periscope and Meerkat, but we also weren’t happy with the developer tools available to build these kinds of experiences. We saw two approaches towards creating…
